The Agile PMO: Project Nirvana or Oxymoron?

Hosted by Aki Namioka

Three types of PMO responsibilities:
- Governance/Finance
- "Resource Allocation"
- Process

Let's talk about the PMI Agile Process Guide

What is a PMO?
- Provides interface between Agile and the business
- Helps navigate interdependencies between teams
- Helps understand the larger system
- Maintains consistency of purpose across the organization
- Convey information (status, measurements, etc.)

Having a clear division of responsibilities makes it easier

"What's my job now that I'm not planning and executing projects?"
- should they still ask for status?

And what about Program Managers?
- each organization has their own definition
- Administers the environment in which products are built and released
- Product Managers are more strategic and own product vision

Product Managers: Are they that different from Product Owner?

Is all of this complexity really necessary?
- At scale, yes, because specialization is required to support larger efforts

Should an Agile PMO support Agility and Agile Transformation?
- Agility Center of Excellence?
- Servant Leader to the organization?

It's a difference in mindset and values
- Project Managers are adept at managing complexity; look ahead to "manage risk"

And what about Portfolio Management?
- Definition, funding, coordination

Agile PMO that brings Agility to all parts of the company
- Beyond Budgeting
- Marketing
- Compliance
- IT
